What is the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019?

The CAA 2019 aims to amend the citizenship act of 1995.

This act amends  that the non-muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who entered India on or before december 31, 2014 are not liable to India citizenship.

Migrants from religions including Hindu, sikh, buddhist, parsis, christians are covered under the CAA.

When will the CAA act be implemented?

The CAA act was implemented by the government of India on March 11.

This act notifies the to fast track citizenship for non-muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who came to India before Dec 31, 2014.

An online portal for the citizenship process is already in place.

This portal will work towards making the conversation between the applicant and the authorities easy going.

Aspiring citizens can use this portal to submit their documents and track their application status.

The Government has also come up with a helpline number (1032)  to assist applicants with Indian citizenship.

What are the provisions of CAA?

The act lowers the qualification period for Indian citizenship from 11 years to 15 years.

It specifically targets religious minorities (except Muslims) from neighboring countries.

Some critics say that this act discriminates based on religion and breaks the secular principles of India constitution.

What are the misconceptions associated with CAA?

Many protesters believed that the CAA applies to all legal immigrants, which is not true.

Some protesters linked CAA with other amendments such as the abolition of article 370 and ram janmabhoomi verdict.

The act made the  Indian Muslim community feel that the nation doesn’t accept them.

The misconceptions of people lead the supreme court to receive over 234 petitions about the  CAA act being against the constitution.

A person from Bangalore hanged himself because he thought that his citizenship would be revoked.

All the recent amendments have nothing to do with CAA and the nation is not biased against Muslims.

Amit Shah made a clarification that the CAA doesn’t take anyone’s citizenship but it aims to grant citizenship to the oppressed migrants.
