Dr Moumita Debnath was a 2nd year post graduate trainee in Kolkata’s RG Kar medical college. She was brutally raped and murdered inside the very premises of the college she was studying in. 

The college has come under heavy scrutiny for trying to push the incident under the rug as a suicide.

Arrest Made by Kolkata Police

The very next day, Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy as the main accused after the CCTV footage from the seminar hall captured him coming and going at the time of the crime. 

Upon his arrest, Roy confessed his crime in front of Kolkata Police.

Following the events, nationwide protests have been taking place. Doctors throughout the country, most notably in Delhi, have gone on indefinite strike, which is going on till this day.

Patient services in hospitals across Delhi have been severely affected by the protest which demands swift action and stricter laws to ensure safety at work and prevent violence against healthcare workers.

The Demand for Imminent Justice

The protests are not limited to the health professionals, as the demand for imminent justice grows stronger. All over India, candle marches have been organized.

The historical “Reclaim the Night” marches have been organized in Kolkata and Delhi to condemn societal prejudices against women, demanding systematic changes. Hashtags like #JusticeForKolkataDoctor and #ReclaimTheNight are trending all over Instagram and Twitter.

Developments In The Case

The Supreme Court has taken the case suo-motu. The CJI has criticized the hospital for its delayed actions, late filing of the FIR and mishandling of the victim's body.

The Court has constituted a 10-member national task force to develop protocols for ensuring the safety of healthcare workers across the country. The CBI is currently conducting its investigation around the potential involvement of the Principal of the college.
