Mr. Yechury was admitted to AIIMS almost a month ago due to a pneumonia-like chest infection. He was admitted to the ICU and despite best efforts of doctors, succumbed to the illness in the afternoon of 12th Sept.

Sitaram joined JNU to pursue PhD in Economics in 1973. The next year, he joined the Student Federation of India (SFI). In ‘75, Emergency was imposed, and Sitaram was arrested when he protested JNU’s decision to ban SFI.

From SFI to CPI(M)

Till ‘78, he was elected as the Student Union’s President 3 times, during which he forced Indira Gandhi to resign as the JNU Chancellor. He soon became SFI’s President in ‘84, which he left to join CPI(M). By ‘92, he was in the Politburo of CPI(M).

The Most Formidable Voice

In 2004, the Left recorded its best performance, winning 60 seats– after which they joined UPA. Next 10 years, Sitaram remained the key voice of the Left. During his spell in Rajya Sabha, his ideologies were lauded by several members.

Part of The Opposition Bloc

After bidding an emotional farewell to Rajya Sabha in 2017, Sitaram remained a part of the opposition bloc INDIA till 2024, where he was seen at the sides of the bloc leaders. After BJP’s win, he regularly voiced his criticism through social media.
